The Blank Page – How To Overcome Writer’s Block

Many of us have faced this problem at some point in our writing careers. We wish to write but don’t know where to start and what to write. Here are some tips that worked for me to overcome writer’s block.

Tip#1 Begin with the end in the mind

Knowing what to write is the key. Often, we sit to write even before identifying the subject and end up staring at the blank page.

But how to identify the subject?

Take enough preparatory time to zero in on your subject. Generally, this is the most time-taking phase of screenwriting. I suggest you take as much time as needed to get to a great subject line before anything.

Read about how to identify a subject.

The subject is a one-liner that contains Character, Conflict and Action the character takes to resolve the conflict.

It is better to have a niche subject for the screenplay to get funded by the Producers and Studios. Please avoid cliches and save the viewers from boredom.

Once you identify your subject, you now know what to write! You are out of writer’s block.

Tip#2 Self-Discipline

Make writing a habit. Spend at least an hour each day to sit down and work on your screenplay no matter whatever stage you are in the process of writing a script.

Better to stick to a particular time every day. Early morning or midnight, whatever time suits you. Put everything aside and write. It doesn’t matter if it just a single sentence or one word. The important thing is to dedicate that one hour to writing.

The result is exponential. If you sit down every day for one hour to write, you can write one screenplay every month.
